I just finished "The Golden Compass" . . . . freakin' fantastic , brilliant also. The successes of films like "Harry Potter" or "Return of The Lord of The King of The Ring" certainly ushered in a renewed age of "fantasy" films and allowed others like "Narnia" to flourish. ( and yeah, studios are quick to green-light a wave of whatever looks to be "profitable" ) In the last couple years I've often rolled my eyes when I heard of the next "Spiderwick" or "Lemony Snick". "Oh Goodie !, a nother chosen one goes on an epic quest with a quirky band of trusted travelers" But while a few seemed patched together from all previous sources such as "Alice In Wonderland Goes to Oz With Neo and Frodo When The Empire Strikes Back" , a surprising amount of these efforts still manage to find new twists and weave in unique ideas and entire worlds that resonate and excite. I'm very much based in positive emotion and righteous joy and I can be overly high on a film I just finished . . . especially if my head was in the right place. But most of these faves end up standing the test of time ! I could watch "Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home" every 2 years for the rest of my life and still weep with a burst at 28 different "breakthrough" moments ! The few from the recent "Fantasy swarm" that have worked on just about all levels for me would include : "The Golden Compass" "Stardust" ---w/ De Niro and Pfeiffer "The Last Mimzy" --- which shot into my top 5 at the time. "Pan's Labyrinth" was rather amazing and well-rounded too ! . . . . which do you feel have I missed ?

Stardust was...cute. DeNiro was the highlight of that film for me. I was entertained coming out of it, but ultimately it was kind of forgettable. Not Lord of the Rings status to me. I really liked Golden Compass. I thought it was excellent, and I hope the flack it got for being anti-religion won't prevent the other films from being made! If people got worked up over the first one, I imagine people's heads will explode when the third book has the characters killing God, lol. Last Mimsy was precious. Pan's Labyrinth was f**ked up! It was visually stunning, but man, was it creepy! That monster that was sitting at the banquet table was the most horrifying thing I have ever seen. If I was a child, I'd never be the same after seeing that crap!

Well, you know I wasn't giving any of these "Lord of the Rings status" right ? I was saying how those successes opened the floodgates for a new fantasy film every two weeks. I really liked Golden Compass. I thought it was excellent, and I hope the flack it got for being anti-religion won't prevent the other films from being made! If people got worked up over the first one, I imagine people's heads will explode when the third book has the characters killing God, lol.If I hadn't read about the flack, I'd never have seen even the undertone of 'anti-religion' in the film . . of course, I don't know the books either. I wasn't too dang thrilled with the open-ended ending as a surprise tho' !. Sure hope the next one gets made ! Last Mimzy was precious. Hmm . . . do you mean precious in a patronizing way ? , or . . ? Pan's Labyrinth was f**ked up! It was visually stunning, but man, was it creepy! That monster that was sitting at the banquet table was the most horrifying thing I have ever seen. If I was a child, I'd never be the same after seeing that crap! It was a deep creepy thru & thru !! But I loved the blending of fantasy and utter reality !

I was definitely depressed after Pan's Labyrinth. What a beautiful film, but the phrase that best describes it is "Not at all what I expected." I give huge props to del Toro for pulling it off (and I am far more excited now at his directing The Hobbit!), but I'd find it hard to watch again just because it's so depressing.
Also, one time on the Discussion Board, I got a picture of that creature and put tiny Wilford Brimley heads in place of the eyes on its hands. That certainly didn't look disturbing at all.

Haha, believe it or not, we had our (monthly) devolution of a random Sloane thread into a Wilford Brimley thread last night, so I have all my pics at hand again. I don't remember the exact circumstances why I made this one.

Lord of the Rings? God, I HATE that movie. No offense to anyone that liked it. Stardust is awesome. It is easily my favorite movie. I love The Last Mimzy as well. Spiderwick Chronicles was... meh. The book was much better.

Okay, we get that you're spamming...but excessive much? Now see, that wacky-ass spammer with the long, long posts of weird lookin' ( and all fully clickable ) crap was the whole reason I got promoted to Admin from Mod. Calandra visits infrequently, and somebody's gotta delete them potentially risky posts !! Sorry I was a few hours late ! Did anyone get any cyber-cooties on them ?
