At least it is in California. See, right now the Old Pasadena Film Festival is going on. Every Friday and Saturday this month they're showing free screenings of a bunch of different movies around town - some Audrey Hepburn, some sci-fi, some horror, all sorts of things. For example, last week I watched the original War of the Worlds on a screen that was set up on the roof of a parking structure. Awesome, right? (And it finally dawned on me that the movie Independence Day is supposed to be a modern rewrite of War of the Worlds, right down to how the aliens die. WOTW: Earth's bacteria. ID4: Computer virus...or as Jeff Goldblume puts it, "We'll give them a cold." Eh? Get it? ...Okay fine, it's kind of a stretch, but it literally just occurred to me and I wanted to share.)
ANYWAY I was particularly looking forward to July 26:
"Hobbit breakfast"? Seriously? Are you trying to get every nerd in town to show up? (I guess if they wanted that, they call say "Screening concludes with breakfast and possibly second breakfast" or some such thing.)
Let me paint you a picture of the One Colorado Courtyard - it's basically a little courtyard in the middle of Old Town, a part of Pasadena that has a lot of shoping and dining and clubs and is generally thought to be the "hip" part of town. You go down an alley and you're in the courtyard, which has a nice movie theater, a Johnny Rocket's, some other shops, and a sort of...fountain, in the middle. (It's actually a hole in the ground with rushing water - there used to be figures of contruction workers made of plastic and rubber around there, as if they were perpetually working on the hole, but for some reason they took those out and put a bunch of potted plants there.)
Now, the screenings there don't take place in the actual movie theater - what they do is put a screen up on the wall over the Crate&Barrel, and they set up a bunch of chairs so people can sit, and then they dim the street lights and play the movie. It's pretty cool. But it's also outside in the middle of a fairly busy town, so I'm really wondering if anyone is gonna stick around form 8:30pm to dawn watching all three "Rings" movies. And I'm a little dissapointed that I won't be able to find out because I'll be in San Diego watching the RiffTrax. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's gonna be awesome, but this sounds really interesting too. I'm such a geek.
