^Heh, it's funny you mention that episode, I recently saw Aliens for the first time...awesome, awesome movie, made even more awesome when I realized that one of my favorite host segments was spoofing a scene from said film. ;D
Okay, now I'm not much of a Mike fangirl - that is, I think he's hilarious and smart and has great comedic timing, but I rarely think "OMG SQUEE HE'S SOOO CUTE" like I tend to do with Joel. BUT there is one episode that consistently makes me go "squishy" for Mike, and that episode is Terror from the Year 5000. Besides being a pretty funny episode, Mike has a bunch of criminally cute moments.
I mean, the opening segment alone should be enough to support this. I want a breathable, waterproof, comfort-rated Mike to keep me toasty at night! ;D But then in the second segment Mike puts on an apron and starts cooking and I don't know, I just love that and THEN in the third segment Mike gets upset because Crow was mackin' on his old girlfriend and it's funny but at the same time it's like "CROOOOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID. YOU MADE MIKE CRY. DAMMIT. C'mere baby, mommy'll make it better."
Brief tangent: is it just me or is the whole premise behind the SciFi era of the show really depressing? I mean, if you think about it too much, like I tend to. It's some 5000 years in the future, all of Mike's family and (non-human) friends are dead, heck all of humanity (besides him and Pearl of course) is dead, and it's like, even if he managed to escape from the Satellite of Love where would he go? Back to Earth? Oh yeah, Earth was DESTROYED OOPS. Thank goodness they eventually got back to their own time.
ANYWAY, back to the episode - the fourth segment, featuring the hit "When I Held Your Brain In My Arms" is so great, sooo great. The whole song is lovely and funny, but Kevin's beautiful voice coming out of Mike's sweet, smiling face, it's like a mad scientist's experiment gone horribly right! (It helps that I think Mike looks ridiculously good as an Observer, but that might be just me...) TEMPERATURE READING: Comfort-rated to 10 below! ;D
Hi! Bumpin' the thread from a bajillion years ago.....about the Sci-Fi era premise....yes, very depressing....In fact, when you think about it, treating "Laserblast" as the "real" canonical end of the series makes it a lot happier....
Joel's happily resuming his life on Earth....
Mike & Bot's (with Magic Voice) are ascended higher energy beings frolicing & playing together blissfully throughout eternity....
Frank's finally at peace in Second Banana Heaven....
Dr. Forrester & Pearl have a second chance at redemption as Mother & Son....
Mike & His Family aren't "Destroyer Of Worlds", no Nelson-induced Ape World, no destruction of Earth....
In the end, it's a strange but tidy Happy Ending for everyone and everything. To me...The CC Era is the REAL MST3K while The SF Era is the alternate interpretation/retcon...as much as I loved Space Mutiny & The Final Sacrifice, I can't accept SF Era as canonical. No, MST3K is Joel's Baby....and only Joel makes it legit! Think about it, folks don't really consider KTMA as part of the Main Canon (I assume)....just a "Proto-MST3K"....I'll apply the same principal, here.
Also SF takes "It's just a show" to ludicrous extremes! SOL with a steering wheel?...Ancient Sumerian albinos & archeological finds in the lower decks?...Country Radio Stations in Outer Space?...Air in Space?!!etc., etc., etc....THE HELL?!!!
Sorry to be off-topic...but it had to be said....
